Intro to Visual Rhetoric

ENGL 3140

Visual Rhetoric is defined as the art of using images to
inform, argue, or persuade. Effective visual rhetoric
always anticipates the question: ?What are you looking at??
The use of visual imagery in advertising, art, and other
texts can be subtle, direct, or provocative. In most cases,
however, we are unaware of how powerful images are and
how significantly they impact our understanding of the
world. This course will introduce students to the theory
and practice of visual rhetoric in a variety of contexts.
As part of their coursework, students will analyze,
discuss, and write about the role of images in popular
culture and they will learn to employ images effectively
in print-based and electronic texts.
